How Long Does Weed Stay In Your Hair?

How Long Does Weed Stay In Your Hair?

According to a recent Quest Diagnostics survey, 50% of all drug test positives are for marijuana.

This makes marijuana users the most-frequently targeted drug users in the world.

Which is really ironic, since natural weed is the least dangerous of all illicit drugs.

Even worse, marijuana remains in your system a long time – far longer than any other drug.

But exactly how long does weed stay in your body?

If you are facing a drug test soon, this is an important thing to know.

If you’re facing a hair drug test, then it’s by far the most important thing you need to know, because hair drug tests can detect marijuana use as far back as a year!

This page walks you through the answer to this question, based on scientific facts – not urban legend.

If you have any questions or corrections, please post a comment below.

Drug Test Detection Times for Marijuana

How far back in time can drug tests detect your marijuana use?

Here is a table that lists reliable detection periods for each type of drug test:

NOTE: These are just averages, and your experience may vary.

Detection time depends on the kind of test used and the sensitivity of the test process and equipment used (they aren’t all the same).

Other factors that affect the accuracy of a drug test for marijuana include:

  • the frequency of use
  • the dosage/concentration of THC
  • the last date/time of use
  • the user’s metabolism (but not as much as people think)
  • the user’s digestive system (if ingested).

How Long Does It Take for THC To Leave Your System?

The following chart illustrates the results of two studies that measured the amount of THC and THC metabolite (THC-COOH) in the blood streams of a large number of marijuana users, over an extended period of time.

It shows how blood levels of THC and the metabolite decay, or dissipate, over time depending on whether you smoked or ate your weed/hash.

Please note that this chart displays the average blood levels for a group of people. Each test subject used a different amount of marijuana, and your chart would look different depending on how much and how frequently you used, etc.

Decay in blood levels of THC and THC-COOH over time

Three things are notable about this chart:

  1. if you smoke weed, your THC blood level spikes high-and-quick, then quickly drops below the typical drug test threshold of 50 ng/mL
  2. if you eat the same amount of THC in an edible, your blood level of THC builds up far more slowly over time and peaks at a far lower level in about 4 hours, then dissipates slowly
  3. THC-COOH – the metabolite used to detect marijuana use in most drug tests – takes a LOT longer to dissipate than THC.  This is why drug tests look for the metabolite THC-COOH instead of THC.

Hair Test for Weed: How Long Does THC Stay In My Hair?

The hair drug test was developed to identify long-term use rather than one-time or infrequent use.

Hair follicle drug tests can detect marijuana use beginning around 7-10 days after first use.

To do this, test labs use mass spectroscopy and other methods to detect the presence of a non-psychoactive byproduct of THC, a metabolite called THC-COOH.

The cutoff level that most tests consider a positive result for marijuana use is a concentration of TCH-COOH of 50 ng/mL or higher in your blood.

One time and infrequent users of marijuana are much less likely to be detected by a hair follicle test.

A 2006 Forensic Science International study, Cannabinoid Concentrations in Hair from Documented Cannabis Users, found that 85% of daily users tested positive for THC use, but only 52% of smokers who used 1-5 times per week were detected.

Eating or ingesting THC also lowers your chance of being detected vs. smoking the same amount of THC.

Urine Tests For Marijuana: How Long Does a Pee Test Detect THC?

The most popular kind of THC drug test is the urine test.

Because THC-COOH takes such a long time to eliminate from your body, urine tests are more sensitive to marijuana than other commonly used drugs. This is why urine tests are the preferred test for detecting recent marijuana use.

Like hair tests, urine tests look for the metabolite THC-COOH, usually with a cutoff of 50 ng/mL.  Urine tests can detect marijuana for days or weeks after use. They can detect marijuana use for days after the high is gone, even in 1-time users.

The following chart shows the results of a recent study of 1-time users of THC.

Urine levels of THC-COOH for one-time users of a standard NIDA cigarette
Source: M Huestis, Mitchell and E Cone, “Urinary Excretion Profiles of 11-Nor-9-Carboxy-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in Humans after Single Smoked Doses of Marijuana,” Journal of Analytical Toxicology, Vol 20:441-52 (Oct 1996).

The most striking thing about this study is how variable the results are – from person to person, and from hour to hour for the same person.

Note that it took Subject B two days to get clean. Subject E was safe the entire time.  Depending on the time of day, Subject G might have passed or failed the 50 ng/mL cutoff.

The reason for this variability is that the concentration of THC-COOH in your urine is highly subject to the amount of water in your body (and urine) and your body’s metabolism.  If you are poorly hydrated or have a low metabolism, you are more at-risk of failing the urine test.

The bottom-line for the urine test is: to be safe, you should assume you will fail if you use any amount of marijuana within a few days of the test.

Blood Tests For THC

A blood test is the most accurate form of marijuana drug test, because it measures the direct presence of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) in your system.

But blood tests only detect drug use back a few days, so they are primarily used in the investigation of accidents and crimes committed under the influence and for spot-testing employees in jobs and professions where any amount of drug influence could be catastrophic.

Blood tests are also ordered in domestic dispute and parole situations, where the court has required abstinence.

Saliva Tests for Weed

In general, saliva tests are not used  to detect marijuana use in the US due to unreliable results.

The main problems with saliva testing for THC, as reported by a large-scale 2006 industry research project, the Rosita Project, include:

  • difficult to obtain enough saliva
  • malfunctioning of devices that read the results

It’s possible, perhaps likely, that the test device manufacturers will continue improving their methods and technologies.

Hair Tests For Alcohol

In the testing industry, the accuracy of the hair drug test for detecting alcohol use or abstinence is hotly debated. In short, the problem is that many common cosmetic procedures can alter the amounts of alcohol-related chemicals that the hair test is looking for.

The hair drug test detects two byproducts of alcohol in the hair follicle, including:

  1. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG)
  2. Fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) including ethyl myristate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl oleate and ethyl stearate

The hair test is not as reliable for alcohol detection as it is for other drugs, because cosmetic treatments can dramatically affect the levels of EtG and FAEEs in your hair. This includes hair straightening, dyeing, bleaching and perming.

In addition, hair products that contain ethanol, such as hairsprays or hair lotions, will affect FAEE levels, though not EtG.

A 2014 survey of 31 test labs held by the Society of Hair Testing concluded that a hair drug test is not, by itself, a reliable indicator of abstinence or excessive consumption of alcohol.

To quote their conclusion:

“It is not advisable to use the results of hair testing for alcohol markers in isolation; all relevant factors surrounding a case must be considered when providing expert interpretation and opinion.”

In other words, the accuracy of the hair test for alcohol is considered unreliable if cosmetic activities are not accounted for.

If you think you may test positive for alcohol use, then you may want to use an aggressive cosmetic treatment or an aggressive hair cleaning regimen like the Macujo method and the Growman/Jerry G method.

  • I have a test in exactly one week. I smoked weed on 3 separate occasions 6 months ago. Before that it had been 2 years. My hair has grown out over an inch and a half since I did it and I've also bleached my hair since then. What do you think my chances are of passing the test

      • I quite smoking 38 days ago, I still fail my morning urine test. I shaved all my hair at day 38, will my new hair growth be ckean?

        • If you are failing a urine test, then you are still growing tainted hair.

This means your TCH-COOH concentration level in your blood is still too high.

After you finally pass your urine test, wait one week - then shave. You should be clean after that.

          • Hi Jay,
Had one edible 60 days ago (didn't get high). Very infrequent user(I mean once every couple months). Prior to this had an edible in August. Have a hair test coming up within the next week. What are the chances of passing and any suggestions??!!!

  • I smoked about 2 grams 7 days ago and it was my first time would they be able to detect in a hair test of its my first time in 8 days ?

      • Ok I am sure this gets said way to often, but here we go. I was really drunk about two weeks ago and took a couple of hits off a joint that one was really small and two wasn't that strong. Now I know I can pass a UA and I have some job interviews lined up and totally forgot about hair tests how do you think I would fare with that type of test

        • If you only took a couple of hits off of one joint, and that's all you've done in the past 6 months, then you'll very likely pass the test.

  • I took a hit or two off a bowl and popped a 60mg vyvanse a month ago. Can't even remember the last time I did any sort of drug. I have a hair test coming up soon, am I good?

  • If I smoke weed for my third time tonight and have a hair drug test in about 80-90 days will they catch it?

  • I was a very heavy smoker for months but I quit at the end of January, do you think I would pass a hair test now? I am a 5'3" 165lbs woman.

    • Jane,

If you cut your hair to 1.5" in length (from the scalp, all around) at any time between now and the test, then there's an excellent chance you'll pass the standard hair drug test (90 day history).

  • I have to take a hair test in a week.

I do not smoke weed regularly at all. I took a few hits exactly two weeks ago and prior to that I smoked a couple of times from a one hitter over the last 90 days.

How likely am I to pass?

  • I smoked .5 grams of marijuana about 8weeks ago (one smoke session) will I pass a hair follicle? Havnt smoked since then or before then?

  • I smoked weed quite a few times a week starting this summer and quit about a week ago. I may be hair tested november or december, what are my chances of passing? please help

    • You have just enough time to clean up your act, if you don't use again.

On Oct 31, if you cut your hair down to 3/4" (all over) or less, then you should test clean from that point forward.

The main issue I see for you is that you won't have the minimum length required (1.5") for a standard hair test, until the end of December.

      Hope this helps,

      JZ

    • I have been a daily cannabis user for years. Preferred method is vaporizing in case that has any impact on this. I quit on/around September 22 in preparation for a preemployment screening. I tested negative dilute on 2 occasions. The perspective employer has given me 2 options...reapply in 6 months under the same terms and conditions or submit to a hair test which if I fail, I would be completely rejected. This job is an amazing opportunity and I really want to secure it, but financially, waiting 6 months seems like forever. Any insight would be helpful...

      • Kelley, if I were you, I'd abstain and wait the 6 months.

You're taking a big risk if you quit on Sept 22 and you take the test any time before the New Year.

  • I hope you still check this, not sure what your background experience is or how you come to the conclusion of whether or not someone will pass a hair test, none the less, I will ask this question for a close friend of mine.

End of May my friend smoked about 3/8 grams of weed... maybe over a weekend. June my friend did not smoke any weed. However, during the beginning of July, July 1st, he again smoked approximately 3/8 grams of weed over a day or two.

Now it is July 19... 18 days since last he last partook in any weed smoking.

When would it be safe to take a hair test? Would his urine test be clear?

My friend is 220lbs, 5, 10... has some belly fat, works out every other day, drinks between 32-54 oz of water daily.

Please advise, I think the Hair test is coming up soon!

    • Your friend is a light user, by anyone's definition. The hair test is not designed to detect this light amount of drug use. So, he should be fine.

Re. credentials, etc: I am a friend of someone who had to take the hair test. So, I researched the crap out of this subject (see research on home page); later, I built this website to share what I learned with everyone else.

The math to determine if you will likely pass or not is actually very straightforward - read our home page, especially comments, to learn more about it.

      • Hey. I am a 23 year old, skinny and fit.
I definitely smoke 3 joints at the very least a gram per day, how long does it take for me to get clean?
I haven't done a urine test for since I were 16 and were just started.

  • I smoked 3 times last week and I have a hair drug test next week. Before that I haven't smoked in almost a year how likely am I to pass the test?

  • I have a upcoming drug test, I haven't smoked weed in 4 years. Is there anyway I can test positive for weed? I also have very long hair. Wondering how much hair they will test.

    • No, you won't test positive if it's been 4 years. Even with long hair. Make sure they take clip the 1.5" sample from the scalp outwards (as they are supposed to), and you'll be fine.

  • if u smoked twice a month for 6mos, stopped in June, now have to take hair follicle test in aug, will you pass?

  • I'm surprised at all the comments asking about personal usage and possibility of passing, but even more shocked that you respond to all of them. I'm sure everyone appreciates that.

Well here's my dilemma. I stopped smoking for 2 years, so I had absolutely no THC in my system whatsoever. Just recently, over the past week I have smoked 2.5 grams of bud. I'm not even sure that I will have to take a hair test, it may be a urine test.

Do you think the THC will show in the hair test? If so, I'm assuming I'll need 90 days to be clean. What are your opinions on probability or even if it will be detected? I greatly appreciate any response. Thank you.

    • I would not be that worried. The hair test isn't designed to detect one-time use, especially of that small amount.

  • This my first time being tested using a hair test. Last time I smoked would have been at the beginning of august. I'm not a heavy smoker. Just a social one. They pulled from my under arm hair today which has never been cut. Do you think the test will be positive

    • Yes, you are at risk if they sampled underarm hair.

Body hair grows much slower than head hair, so it records a far longer period of use, per inch.

  • I had 2 hits from a pipe over a month ago. This is the only time that I have smoked. What are the chances it shows up on a hair test?

  • Hello there,

I have smoked on and off (probably a few times a month) over the last couple years. I have long hair, and don't want to cut it away if I can help it. Do you reckon I could pass a hair follicle test taken mid-late next year? Would it be clean by then?

    Thanks!

    • If don't use any more until then, you should be OK.

The test station will cut your hair at the scalp line, then cut it again and throw away hair that's older than the cutoff period (usually 1.5" for 90 days).

The risk with keeping longer hair is human error. Sometimes, a sample station tech won't cut the right length. At the lab, if they can't tell which end is which, they may be forced to test the whole sample. So, what should have been a 90-day test ends up being a 120-day test.

That's why I always recommend cutting hair down to 1.5" right before the test, just to be sure. But I understand not everyone can do this.

      Best of luck, Smither!

  • I have amoked for years...I recently quit 6 weeks ago to look for a better job..I have a test comming up in about 2 weeks...Also I have long hair...is it possible to pass a follicle test..do I need to cut my hair? Do I need to wait longer?

  • I haven't smoked ib 8mos qn 30 days ago i took a hit of some good weed i hqve a new job opportunity and they hair test will i fail or pass..if i need to wait how long should i wait in what should I do to clean up....if i wait smoked 100days will my hair follicle be clean...... Please help truthful answers only

  • I had to take a hair follicle test today for court to get a base-line level of thc. I am a heavy smoker, and I have smoked just about everyday for the last 3-1/2 years. The judge said that that the levels better be lower in 90 days. My lawyer thinks if I just cut it way down, I can still occasionally smoke and still get my levels to go down. Does that sound right, or would i test completely clean in 90 days if I stopped now?

    • I assume that when the judge says, "better be lower", it means: "you better pass the test"...?

If so, then your lawyer is giving you bad advice.

You should stop cold turkey, right now, to have a chance of passing the test in another 90 days.

You still may not pass, because a heavy smoker needs at least 110-120 days of abstinence to yield a 1.5" clean hair sample.

Perhaps that's what the judge meant (he probably knows how the tests work).

      All the best,

      JZ

  • Hello, I smoked regularly for about a year until a great job offer came my way. I stopped smoking around the end of June and have been clean since then. How likely do you think it would be for me to pass a hair follicle test if it is around the end of January 2017? would really appreciate a reply Thank you!

  • Hi I haven't smoked in years but in mid october I took 2 or 3 puffs of weed (joint) and i will have a hair follicle test in end of December or beginning of January what are my chances of passing the test??

  • I regularly smoked for the last 2-1/2 years. My normal hair length is 1/2 inch, and I am not sure where they are going to pull the hair from. I am a 39 year old male, body builder, excellent nutrition, and 15% body fat. I have a couple of questions. I am going clean tomorrow in anticipation of an upcoming hair test for employment. I would like to take the test in 2 months if I can pass it.

    1. If they take arm pit hair as my head hair is too short, would shaving it a month prior to the test be effective?

    2. With my high metabolism, daily exercise, and healthy diet, is it possible to have it out of my system to pass a hair test sooner than 90 days?

    3. Are there any detox remedies that I can start using now, that will help the process of removing THC from the hair follicle? A detox shampoo treatment the day / week before the test will not work in this situation. They test randomly while on the road and there is no way to run for a quick shampoo.

Thanks so much for your help. This job is a life changer, and will really help my family.

    • Jay,

Since your scalp hair will be 1/2 inch at the time of the test, then there is a good chance they will sample your upper body hair, if they can find enough.

      1. re. arm pit hair: shaving a month before is a good strategy to rid your armpits of traces; however, it also doesn't leave enough hair to sample

      2. no, your metabolism won't make much of a difference; your metabolism has very little impact on how fast your bloodstream eliminates/breaks down TCH-COOH stored in your body fat. The fact that you have low body fat helps to some degree, but not nearly as much as people think. After all, 15% body fat in a 200 lb man = 30 lbs of fat containing drug traces.

      3. the only way to rid your hair follicles of TCH-COOH are (1) be clean for ~100 days + cut the bad hair away; or, (2) try to clean your hair using the two methods mentioned above. I've seen no credible evidence that edibles, pills, drinks, etc. make much of a difference on a hair test.

Best of luck on your test!

      Jay

  • Smoked less than .5 grams total on January 1st and 2nd in Denver. Might have a hair follicle test in mid-March or late March. My hair is about 1.5" right now. Will I pass the test? I don't use regularly, 1 other time in early December, then nothing before that.

  • The last time i smoked was in October of 2016. Took a hair sample from my armpit the 1st of March 2017. FAILED! The lab that did the test was Quest Diagnostic.

  • Hi Jay
Just wanted to say love the site it helped out a lot.
My story. I am not a heavy smoker just occasionally here and there. In October last year on my birthday I smoked and on three or four days after but not real heavy I quit smoking the first week of November Cold Turkey haven't smoked since then. Well fast forward 5/30 I was hair tested it was last Thursday and I passed just found out today. I have to say even though I kinda knew I would I still was not sure and the wait to find out was excruciating....lol the just not knowing has my hair grown out enough, has enough time passed etc. I just wanted to say to anybody who reads this I know shit happens on the fly but if you can and have time just quit give your hair time to cleanse naturally instead of the other things I have read here. I'm gonna say it was 4 1/2 months no smoking and even before that only occasionally so yeah oh and my test was with Pschmedics the name alone is intimidating right, let me tell you I knew, but I didn't. I came here and read every day to try and gauge no lie. I just wanted to share and say good luck. I know Y'all know what time it is, yeah...lol
    Peace.

  • Was just informed I'll be getting a hair test within the next 2 weeks. I haven't smoked since around new years, however I took 2 hits off a small joint on easter. I am 5'5 and 115 pounds. Will I pass?

  • Hi J!

I have been a daily "vapor" of 250mg of THC. Been doing this everyday for the past 2 years. I may have a test coming up soon for a promotion. I quit on March 21st. My hair is a few inches long now, but I usually keep it cut very very short. If I shave my head, how long would I need to wait to get the follicle test and pass? I know for sure 1.5" cut from scalp would fail me now. I'm about 190lbs, 5'9", not super chunky, but couldn't hurt to loose a few pounds. Is the normal, shave now and wait 100 days where I am? what if i shave now, would that help at all? Or do I need to wait longer to shave my head? Thank you so much for your input, I had no idea they would do a hair test, as they have only gave me UAs to pass (which is easy since the lab doesnt watch you piss) previously. No other drugs involved.

    • You are a moderate to heavy user, by drug testing standards. So, you'll need to abstain 120 days, then cut your hair down to 1.5" (for a 90 day test) to pretty much guarantee you'll pass.

  • Hi there, I am seeking advice and a possible plan of action for a hair test.
I am in the market for a new job, and my father works at the local steel mill. They have a family preference and my dad has crazy good sources high up the chain (Union presidents, company bosses).
I want to apply, but I only stopped smoking 2 weeks ago, April 27th. Now I know I have all the time in the world to apply, but I need 100% certainty I'll pass the follicle test.
I am 22 years old, 6' tall, and around 290 pounds. I am rather large, but in all around good health. My hair right now is 2 inches long at the longest.
Now I was a quite heavy smoker up until I quit, smoking a few times a day, everyday, for around 6 months or so.

With all this being said, could I have clean hair in 3-4 months, after cutting it all now, or is there going to have to be a longer wait?

Sorry for the wall of text, I can't find a lot of information with cases like mine online
Thank you so much in advance

    • Body weight and metabolism don't make much of a difference, when it comes to the hair drug test.

Given you were a heavy user, I'd recommend taking the test no less than 120 days after your last hit.

Right before the hair test, shave your body hair off and cut your head hair down to 1.5" all around - just enough to provide a 90-day sample for the test.

      Good luck on the job!

  • I ate a brownie and had a couple of short puffs from a pipe over a 3 day span over 30 days ago. Prior to that it has been well over 90 days since I've eaten or smoked. Very infrequent user. Have a hair test coming up in a couple of weeks. Ordered a home test to make sure, but what are my chances of testing positive. Also, I am bald on the crown of my head and keep what hair I have on my head very very short. So likely they will take from my arm, armpit or leg.

    • Close to the edge. Having short hair usually helps, but your recent use is the issue because it leaves you with <35 days = <1/2 inch of clean hair on your head, at the time of the test. You might want to think about treating/stripping your hair and trimming your body hair down, to be safe.

  • I smoked in mid March a hit or two. Then I stopped until last week May 22 I eat a gummy and smoked weed with oil on it (for the first time) since March. I got a job and they are going to do a hair test. Will I be Ok? or should I turn the job down? And if it comes back positive can they tell my other company I work for?

    • You are close to the edge of pass/fail, esp. if you are petite.

No, one employer cannot tell another one about the results of your drug test. It's confidential.

  • I have to take a hair test this week. I rarely smoke but I took two hits off a bong at the beginning of April and ate an edible around February. Should I be worried about failing? Thanks

  • Hello Jay!

I have not smoked any weed in 3 years, but this summer i am going on a vacation to amsterdam where i plan to smoke alot during the 7 days im there with a few friends. After that i will not be doing any more. The thing is; i will be having a blood, urine and a hair test around 8-9 months after my trip to amsterdam. What are my chances at passing these tests?

    • Your chances of passing are excellent. To be extra-sure, cut your hair to less than 2.5" in length, all around.

      Have fun in Amsterdam!

Heads up: the laws there changed recently, and the coffee shops no longer serve non-Dutch citizens (wink wink).

  • I smoked once and sometimes twice a week, not heavy very light usage, in the month of May 2017. Kind of for the whole month. I also smoked two times, on two different days at the end of the month. Before that its been 5 years since I smoked. I have a hair test coming in about a week or 3 weeks. I also took a UA the other day and it was negative. Do you think I will pass the hair test?

    • I think that right now, you are at a high risk of failing a hair test, without doing something to mitigate.

  • I used a sativa based coffee for three days. The Total over three days was maybe one ounce or slightly over one-ounce maybe 1.50 OZ of coffee. The coffee ingredients are 80 mg THC and 3mg CBD in a 4.20 oz bottle. I have not used any THC for a year. Prior to that, I used Marijuana 7 times last summer over 3 months July-Sept. same coffee drinks one oz at a time and prior to that no use for 10 years. How long do you think - 1.5-ounce coffee drink from this past weekend stay in my system and hair? How long do you think it will take for me to pass Blood, urine and hair tests? thx!

    • I think you're probably safe. Two reasons:

      1. Ingesting THC is less risky than smoking the same amount, because THC metabolizes more gradually when eaten/consumed. This means the maximum concentration of THCOOH deposited into/onto your hair will be lower than if you smoked the same amount.

      2. You consumed a small amount (20-30 mg).

Wishing you the best on your test...

  • I appreciate your posts. They are very helpfully. Between May 4 to May 6 I ate four cookies while out in Colorado on vacation. It was my first time and I have never smoked. I have a hair test on August 2. Should I cut my hair to be safe? If so, how long? Thanks.

  • i was a regular smoker an drink beer. 2 months ago i quit smoking bud for a new job coming up. im 5'7 170 lbs and cut my hair to 1/8 inch today. my hair grows fast about a inch a month. how long should i wait to take the hair test, and is the new hair growing now have any thc in it? thank you

    • Yes, it is highly likely that all of the hair on your head is clean and will test negative for THC.

Let it grow out for about 90 days more, before taking the test. This is so the lab will have the minimum length they need, to pass you.

  • Hi there! I am a pretty light smoker and had an edible back in June and smoked 3 times in July. I haven't had anything since and was planning on taking my hair test in 6 months. Do you think that's a long enough wait time? I also never cut my hair :/ could I possibly schedule it sooner or wait the 6 months to be safe?

    • If you continue to abstain for 6 months, then, yes, you should pass the test with no issues. All the best!

  • I smoked regularly and stopped for a month and a week, I cut my hair but not all the way off, and I have a hair follicle test coming up soon, I am fit and easily sweat a lot and work out daily, do I have a chance of passing a hair test under these ocnditions

    • You probably won't pass, sorry.

Also: How fit you are... and how much you work out... will not help you pass a hair drug test. The record of prior drug use is already stored in your hair.

Right now, new hair growing through your scalp is drug-free.

But you'll need 2-3 months more hair to grow, before you'll have enough clean hair to sample (1.5").

  • Hey Jay,

So back on may 20 i was out and a girl had me try a vap, turns out it was THC oil. I didn't know. Never smoked before. Its been about 125 days since, I have a hair test coming up in the next week. Last time i did the the test like 2 years ago for another position i used my chest hair, i don't have a lot of hair on my head. Now I had my back waxed may 31 for a vacation ordeal hair has grown back. Do you think its safe to use my back hair for test or hope I have 1.5 inches on my head.

    • Here's what I would do:

Cut your hair down to 1" or less in length, all-around your head. Do this a couple of days before the test. Also, shave your body hair off, including underarms.

The hair on your head should be clean for the test, although it won't be long enough to satisfy a full 90-day look back test.

That said, sometimes the lab will take what they can and call it a day. If not, then they may ask you to come back in 30 more days - in which case, you'll be clean.

      Good luck!

  • Can you fail hair folicle test if you are around users but you dont smoke weed i was wondering someone said you can fail by be around it or do you have to smoke if they smoked couple times could they fail

    • NO, you cannot fail a hair drug test if you do not ingest/inhale the drug yourself. Second hand smoke will not cause you to fail.

  • Hi, question for you. I was a regular user (a few times a week) for about two years, but quit in May-5 months ago. I have smoked about 4times since August. The last time was in AMS on honeymoon. That was about thirty days ago. I got a new job and I have to get a hair test next week. I have pretty short hair, and could cut it shorter. You think I’m at risk? What could I do to strengthen my chances?

  • If I quit cold turkey Aug 28 (heavy smoker), shaved my head 6 weeks later. What's the odds of passing after new years? It will be 126+days clean

  • Hi!

I smoked 2 joints on july 15 and have to take a hairtest for a job. I am a first time user and wonder how long I have to wait until I am safe?

  • Was a every day smoker, but haven't smoked in 90 days. Got a test in two weeks. The test goes back 90 days but I'm a black man with thick hair, and still a little worried.

    • You are right on the edge. Dark/curly/thick hair is more at risk when it's been only 110 days since your last use - but just barely. If you can take a little off the ends, you'll fare better.

  • Hi Jay,

'm a 57 yo guy who smoked about an ounce a month for 6 years and quit cold turkey on June 10, 2017. I shaved off all body and head hair 45 days later. I'm going to try to get a commercial drivers license and the company requires a hair follicle test. I keep my bald head too closely cropped for a scalp hair test, but have adequate facial and chest hair for testing. By the time I get to the test 9 months will have passed after quitting. I would very much appreciate an idea of my chances for passing and or any further advice thereof,
    please!

  • I'm a guy, height 6'1, weight 180 pounds with a high metabolism.
I take around 1-2 real small bong hits a week. Am I considered a regular or one-time user?
If I stop smoking immediately and have a hair test in 1 month, will I be alright?
    Thanks in advance.

    • a) you are a 'moderate user'
      b) you are at a high risk of failing, given your pattern of use and only 30 days to go

  • Jay Z

I was looking to see if i needed to use the macujo method but after reading all this useful information from you helping all these people i realized that i was fine and ill pass the test.
I just want you to know that i greatly appreciate you for helping me and all these other people on this website. I got so much respect for you man.

    Much love. <3

  • If I smoked a cigarette that had a little bit of weed in the end of it about 2 weeks ago and before that I haven't smoked for around 2 years will I be okay to take a hair follicle test in a week? thanks

  • My friend smoked maybe 3 bongs each night on Nov 3 and Nov 4 2017 and may have a hair test coming up in about a week. Prior to that he hadn't touched any weed at all in about 2 years.

He is not even sure if a hair test will be conducted. If so, will he be safe ?

  • Very heavy smoker, quit 12/06/17. Cut hair to 1/2 inch on 1/04/2018 and shaved body. Cut hair again 3/1/2018 to 7/8th of an inch (about 1/2 to 3/4 inch was removed) and shaved body with clippers. Here is the kicker, my urine was dirty for close to 80 days. I have been reading a ton of peer reviewed journals that state it can enter hair through skin and sweat glands, if I was pissing dirty would it still be going into my hair? Not sure when I will get my test, but it could be any day now.

    • Wow, that's rare - for THC metabolites to still be in your urine, 80 days later!

If it's in your urine, then yes, it's likely that metabolites are still running high in your bloodstream and getting deposited into your hair.

Overall, it sounds like you are one of those unlucky edge cases where THC really loves hanging out in your fat cells. Truly sorry about that.

  • I smoked about 5gs of marijuana between December 16th and January 4th and lighter before that. I have a drug test within the next two weeks and there's a good chance it will be a hair follicle drug test. I'm currently 64 days clean and will be between 70 and 77 days clean by the time I get tested. The thing is my hair grows quicker than average and has just grown about 1.2 inches since I cut it January 13th. Using math I got that it would take me 70 days to get the first 1.5 inches of my hair to be clean assuming that hair growing immediately after I stopped smoking contains no THC, but I don't know how long it takes hair to grow out of your scalp or how they test for this in general. I have a fast metabolism, weigh 130lbs, and am 22 years old. Advice/comments are very appreciated.

    • If your hair grows that fast, then cutting it down to 1.5" the week of the test might work for you. You might slip by.

That said, I'd probably cut your head hair to 1.25" all around, to be safe.

They might ask you to return in a couple of weeks if they aren't happy w/ the length. But by then, you'll still be clean.

  • If one were to smoke their last J today, and shave their head 15 days from now, does it mean there will be no traces in their new hair? If not, how many days must one wait after their last day to shave their head completely? Do the traces travel throughout the entire strand of hair or just one bit of it? (Not taking into consideration the rate of hair growth)
    Thanks in advance!

    • It takes longer than 15 days for clean hair to start poking through your scalp line. Two reasons:

      1. Your blood needs to get clear. It takes anywhere from a couple of days to 20 days for THC metabolites to decline in your bloodstream enough to stop depositing positive levels into your hair.

      2. Clean hair needs time to get through your scalp. You also need to factor-in how long it takes for that last bit of tainted hair to grow from the follicle up through your scalp line, which is about 7 days.

When you add these two delays together, you get a delay of 9 to 27 days b/w your last drug use and the last bit of tainted hair growing through your scalp. Depending on how much you use. 20 days is a good rule of thumb.

This is why I tell my friends they will need to wait 110 days after their last use to grow 90 days of clean hair - here's the math:

110 days = 20 days for clean hair to poke through your scalp + 90 days of clean growth.

  • Hi,
I have smoked marijuana for around 1 month and the last day I smoked was around 25th Feb. I have a hair drug test on 4th May and I am using Aloe Toxin Rid Shampoo 3 times a day since 19th April. Will I pass the test?
    Thanks.

    • You want to clean/strip your hair every day for several consecutive days, right up to the day of the test. Don't use it all up too soon.

  • Hello,
I smoked something about 0,1-0,2 grams in joint together with tabacco. I´ll go to hair drug test after 35 days of this occasion. Before that i smoked maybe year-two years ago and I´m quite a skinny guy. Will I pass the test?
    Thanks

  • I also smoked some time in october or november but i stopped until i ate those two gummy edibles in march they were around 10 mg each. i’m not a heavy user whenever i smoke i take tiny hits and i haven’t smoked in at least 6 months

  • My question is: if you've been abstinent from using any drugs long enough to get them out of your system, then bleach and redye hair. Do you need to keep bleaching and redying your hair in order to pass hair follicle? Or are do u only need to strip your hair once or twice and it will stay clean until your next use?

    • If you are at-risk, then you definitely need to strip your hair right before your test (1 day prior).

Clean it too early, and you are not protected from the new (tainted) hair that grows-in after that.

  • Daily smoker (about 3 joints in a day). After 26 days clean, I smoked 6 joints. Last week 05/10/2018 I took more 3 hits. My test will be in the middle of August or maybe begging of September. What I need to do in order to pass? If I drink 10 glasses of water everyday and workout a lot will it help? I am athletic.

  • Wow! I learned a lot from this post! It's no wonder why law enforcement prefers hair drug testing!

  • My question is I've puffed pass three joints the week of Mar 12th thru 16th. Not a smoker at all. I have a hair follicle test at the end of June. Will I be able to pass?

  • Im a heavy smoker, been smoking for years. Just found out I may have a hair follicle test coming up soon. Stopped smoking 06/25/18. I want to cut my hair to a bald fade and just let it grow. I have everything to do the majuco method, just want to know what I should do. Don’t know exactly when the test is coming but I do know that it will be soon.

  • Hi! I'm an incredibly light user...Last I smoked, if I remember correctly, was January?? Prior, I hardly smoked..maybe twice out of a month, if that. Since Jan, I haven't smoked a bowl. Today, I had a hair follicle test along with a UA. I feel pretty safe about the UA results but what about the follicle test?? My hair is pretty long...thanks.

  • I was an every day pot smoker for years, high grade stuff. The last time I smoked was 04/22/2018. On 06/24/2018 I shaved my hair to a buzz cut. I will have a hair follicle test coming up 08/03/2018. Should I be able to pass with no problems? I am hoping to have at least 1/2 inch of hair (I am taking biotin, hair supplements and using biotin shampoo). I also plan on shaving all my body hair so they cant test that. But wondered what my chances of passing with head hair was. I would also be 103 days clean.
Also want to note that the place I am getting the HFT done at says that 1/2 inch is fine.

    • You've done everything right and should pass w/ 1/2" of hair. You're lucky that's all they are clipping though ;-)

  • Hi Jay,
I stopped smoking in october after a 1yr and a bit of regular smoking, i shared a roll up, skinny one, with a friend of mine in at the start of june, i have a drug test coming up in a couple of weeks, will it be possible to detect?

  • I'm currently 38 days clean and I decided to shave all my body hair and cut my hair down to 6mm. Idk when they will collect the hair, but should I be OK when they do? If the length won't be enough, do you have some ideia what they will do next? Maybe even fingernail test?

    • Fingernails are a possibility, but that's a rare option.

If you are a heavy user of marijuana, then you are right on the borderline w/ 38 days clean + 6mm of hair on your head as of 7/18. I'd probably cut & shave again in two weeks, just to be sure.

  • Jay I smoked heavy from ages 12-19 I am 22 now... in January 2015 I quit weed for good

This last February 2018 I was drinking weed milk for like 3 weeks of that month

I pretty much drank .05 - 1 gram per 1 cup amount each day for like 3 weeks it is 5 months later, yesterday I took a hair drug test for a new job

What are my chances of passing?? It has been about 150 days

    • I think you will be OK. THC metabolites from edibles/drinks build slower and decline slower in your body.

But 5 months is plenty enough time for your blood levels to return to normal and to grow 1.5" of fresh, clean hair.

Let us know how it turns out!

  • Not sure if you still see this but I have a question.

Up until about a month ago I was a regular smoker. Maybe 4 or 5 hits every day or every other day. It's been 32 days since I've smoked since I'm looking for another job. Well I have my 3rd interview on Wednesday. They havent said it's a hair test, but given how big the company is I'd be surprised if it wasn't. I have thing dirty blonde hair, but a slow metabolism. I had a similar situation a few years ago where I passed using the macujo method (vinegar, clean and clear, tide, bleaching and redying x3) not sure if that's what made me pass or maybe my hair doesnt hold thc as long.

Anyway, I'm thinking my odds of passing without chemical intervention are pretty slim. Any thoughts?

  • I used to be a heavy smoker of Mary Jane for about four months in a row. I quit completely back in February and haven't used at all since then because I have been looking for a better job. I've gotten an offer for an amazing job and have done my drug test the 3rd of August. I was clean for almost four months and then shaved my underarm hair and continued to stay clean as it grew out (shaved in June). I'm black so I normally keep my head hair low, below a .5 inch, faded close. My underarm hair did grow to be close to an inch or at least the longest hair on my body. I haven't seen much up here regarding my particular situation but if I've been clean for five months and cut my underarm hair 3-4 months after quitting to let it grow should I be ok? The technician was forced to take the hair at its length due to the shortness of my head hair and it being the longest and most concentrated with my underarms. Also they said the test would go back 8 months but I'm not sure how that's possible being that the sample hair is only about a month or two old at the most. Please advise.

    • They cannot test back 8 months if you don't have 8 months of growth on your body. So that's a non-starter.

That said, I think you will probably test clean given the amount of time you waited before shaving.

They will only be able to look back a few months with the sample you offered them, but if they took the sample then that's the lab's problem - not yours.

  • I have been brought a marijuana brownie. It looks delicious. I have not ever had one and I'm dying to try it. I haven't smoked since Labor Day of last year (2017). I am wanting to apply for a job that I know does a hair follicle but around the 17th of this month. If I wait that long the brownie will be no good and hard. I'm wondering if I eat a piece of brownie made with 7 grams of weed now, will it show up a BFP (bug fat positive) for marijuana? Yes, I know I should be an adult and wait but like I said I take the risk of the brownie be nasty by the time I can actually eat it. Smh. Sorry.

  • I had one puff of a joint a month ago and possibly will have a hair follicle test in 2 weeks. Before that I have only ever had weed once, which was a year ago. Am I likely to pass?

  • i have been smoking weed since i was 18 years old, now im 32 and will be 90 days weed free next week. i've been reading comments on here and just wanted to ask if i should shave off all body hair and get a buzzcut at the 90 day mark? or is the hair i have now ok for a possible pass? just wanted to get mor clarity on the time frame as if i should maybe wait another month to let hair grow from the 90 day mark? thanks for the feedback!! highly appreciated

    • Dunno when your test is, but if you're a heavy long time user then you need another ~20 days from now before clean hair is growing through your scalp.

You'll need another 90 days of growth from that point to test clean.

In other words, you should be safe to test ~110 days from now.

Just make sure your hair is cut down to 1.5" or less before the test.

  • I was a regular smoker for YEARS! I quit about 111 days ago (who's counting) but have smoke a little on three separate occasions with the last time being 10 days ago about 1/2 a joint. I also smoke a CBD pen. Do you think I'll test positive? I took a home test and it was negative but I am worried about the hair. I am a female with VERY long hair.

    • Yeah, you are def. running a risk of failing. Take a look at doing the Macujo or Jerry G method to reduce your risk.

      All the best...

  • Hi this may sound stupid but I am very very paranoid. At the end of April I had one brownie, first time I had ever done and edible. I have never smoked. I have a hair test next week (about 120 days from the time I ate the brownie). Is that enough time for me to pass without worrying or should I delay it?

  • Hello this is my quick story . Smoked 86 days ago prior to test literally one hit of some good dro out of a pipe. Smoked 10 days ago prior to test 3 small pulls off a joint and that’s it . Took a hair follicle Wednesday praying I passed, what’s your thoughts? I personally have passed hair follicles with smoking more than that but it’s always been a month month and a half prior to the testing being 10 days prior to the test worries me a little since it’s so fresh but not quite sure if that matters.

  • I smoked twice, both a whole joint. The first time was 4/20 and the second 7/4. My hair test is in three weeks. I cut my hair down to a half inch three weeks ago. Will i be good?

  • After not smoking for over a year I smoked daily for 6 months. I stopped smoking 70 days ago. I have a hair follicle in two days. I am going to cut all the hair off my body and the hair on the head is less than an inch and hair on my beard about an inch. I have had atleast 4 haircuts since I stopped smoking so the hair left will be pretty much new grow. I believe I have pretty good metabolism and my hair grows prett fast. Any chance of me passing.

    • Jerald, you remain at a very high risk of failing a hair test, even with just 1" of hair on your head.

Given the amount of use recently, you'd need another 30+ days of being clean to be clear of trouble.

Sorry for the bad news :-(

      Good luck!

  • Hi im abit woried i used to smoke 1 very small splif a day for years i am 210 days clean to day what are my chans of pasing hair folical test. Thank you

    • Your chances are good that you will pass without needing to do anything special. I've heard of REALLY heavy users failing even after abstaining for a year. But it's really rare.

  • Hello J, thanks for putting this resource together, it has been very helpful. I have read through the entire thread and didn’t find anything specific that could help put my mind at ease. Although I feel fairly confident in my understanding of the science, I need to articulate my situation in hopes of your insight.
I am a middle-age, white male, in shape and normal body weight for my size. I have an upcoming pre-employment hair test anytime between now and the week of 12/03 (up to me when I do it). I could *potentially* push it back farther also, but not without it potentially straining things. Here’s the scenario:
I have not been a routine user for the last 12 years, in that entire time had used maybe 8 times. This past year, really the only time I’ve used THC oil is to help with severe anxiety and sleep issues, maybe 3 mos (July-Sept), 3x a week and stopped Sept.29th. Usually one hit from a pen, when I did use, and that’s it.
I have very short hair, as I don’t have much on my head and keep it tight (1/8” or maybe a bit longer). I shave it weekly down to 1/8”.
As of three weeks ago, I shaved my chest and underarms, as I normally do. Over this weekend, anticipating the upcoming test, I shaved all my body hair down to 1/2” or less. This, in theory, should have cut off any affected hair that could still have traces in it. (?)
I took a urine test Sat and passed fine so I know I’m clean there. My driver’s license pic has me with short hair as this is always the way I keep it so it’s not unusual.

What do you think are my chances: (Knowing yes, I don’t have the luxury of having 100+ days, but, keep in mind, I’ve shaved my head hair every week since I’ve stopped 58 days ago. And my chest and armpits at least once.)

1.) to have the testing agency accept to test me with very short hair?
2.) Passing if I am tested?

    • OK, so the urine test result is good - but that only tells you that your blood level of THC metabolite is below the cutoff, right now. At the time of a clean blood or urine test you can still have up to 7 days of tainted hair hiding under your scalp line that hasn't yet appeared.

With that in mind - as long as your hair is less than 1/2" on 12/03 - then you should test clean, given the information you shared.

Will the testing agency accept your short hair?

Well, 1/8" is definitely not enough to test - so they will likely want to sample your leg, arm or body hair instead. Or they may ask you to defer another month assuming your employer's instructions allow for this - and it seems like they might, given your description.

Best of luck on your test!

  • Jay,
My husband had an edible 9/16 and prior to that, he vaped a lot in March then less frequently during the summer. I probably smoke once or twice on a weekend or two late August/early September. If I count the 90th days it would be next Monday 12/17. He is waiting to get a written offer then will need to take a hair test right after, most likely by end of next week. He only has hair on his beard just enough for the test as he is bald and I’ve shaved off everything. What do you think his chacea are passing the hair test?

    • He's right on the edge I think - especially if they take a sample from his beard.

Facial and body hair grow at different rates than head hair (generally a lot slower), and it's really hard to know if your beard is short enough to eliminate any tainted hair strands.

  • I ate a brownie on the 18th of february before this I've only ever ate it a couple of times before (november 2018) and potentially have a hair test at the earliest on the 16th of April, my hairs quite long and i wouldn't be able to cut it down, will i pass?

  • If I took a puff every night for years and stopped around Christmas. Hadn’t done anything since until February just one puff. And March ate an edible chocolate took hair test today. What are my chances of passing?

  • I smoked 2-3x a week max (one bowl from a bong per session)... I would sometimes go a month or two months not smoking at all. I will be clean for 110 DAYS prior to going in for my hair follicle drug test. During my time being clean, I did live with heavy smokers. I've been using Paul Mitchell 3 shampoo & a detox hair growth serum from Amazon (one containing which hazel). I exercise 4x a week, have <20% body fat, & eat fairly healthy. What are your thoughts on whether I will pass? It is a Psychomedics test

    • You have juuuust enough time to pass - if you are willing to cut your hair down to 1.25" or less all over your head right before the test date (the day before).

You are a moderate user and right on the cusp time-wise for a 90-day look-back test (1.5" sample of hair).

If you cut your hair to a bit less than 1.5" all around, then you'll very likely pass and you will eliminate the risk of human error (the lab tech taking the wrong cut of hair).

  • hi i smoked 1g around per day for 4 weeks i have a hairtest on end of December when i cut my hair in 30 days down to zero can i get test negative?

    • You have plenty of time. Given your heavy recent use, i'd wait 45-60 days before shaving your head (middle of July to first of August). You should be OK by December if you do this.

  • HI my name is Brian I took one hit of weed on the 11th of this month and took another hit on the 14th of this month will it still show up in my hair and urine cuz I got a drug test coming up in the next 16 days

  • Hey I have a question ok I have olny been around second hand smoke like in the car and at home I shaved my head about 70 days ago and haven't been around smoke for at least 100 days ago you think I will pass ihad a test a couple of days ago and have been worried about it

  • Forsure the last day i was around any smoke was June 2 because he quit that day and we wore in a well ventilated area

  • Hi
Elderly Lady here, is salt and pepper hair more susceptible to the drug out come due to lack of pigments ,!? ...or no difference..

  • I was a heavy smoker until June 11th, that was my last day I smoked. I have a hair test on October 25th do I have a good chance of passing. And should I get a haircut?

    • You should pass - but given your heavy use, you should probably cut your hair to no longer than 1.5" all around in the week of your test - just to make sure.

  • Hi, I smoked last on August 23rd and before that once a month starting in March. I have a hair test in late December/ early January. I am a female with medium length hair. (about to my shoulders) do I need to cut any of it before the test or do I need to cleanse it somehow help. This is super urgent!!!

    • You should test clean - you'll have more than 110 days of abstinence by late December.

Don't shave your head! The lab techs are trained to take the youngest 1.5" of hair for their sample - which means making the cut from your scalp line + 1.5". Your tainted / older hair further out should not be in the sample pack - assuming they do their job right. Most do.

  • I tried a small chunk of an edible for the very first time about a month ago (October 12th), and I'm now currently starting the screening process for NYPD, which means I might have my hair drug test sometime late next month or January of next year. Is there still a chance I can still pass? plus I've NEVER tried weed since or even before the day I tried it

  • Daily bong smoker x 2 years. Quit 10/15/19 and have hair follicle test 1/7/2020. Am I going to be ok? Brown thicker straight hair. Female.

    • Maria Ray, you are def. at risk of failing.

Given your heavy use, you'll need another 20-30 days of sobriety before your hair test to ensure a good chance of testing clean.

If you can't change the date, then you may want to consider cutting your hair <1" or using one of the methods described on this site (Macujo for example) to strip your hair clean. Good luck...

  • I last used on August 28th. I was a daily twaxed blunt, high concentrate smoker (dabs all day). Have been abstinent for 115 days. I have a hair test coming up. Will I pass?

    • That is heavy, chronic use.

I'd cut your hair <1.5" all around, shave all of your body. If you have >120 days since last use when you are tested, you should pass... theoretically... but I've seen evidence of really heavy users failing 90-day hair tests 150 days after last use.

So yeah, you are 'high risk'.

      Do everything you can.

      Best of luck!

  • I smoked a blunt beginning of September then ate a 50mg edible in October. Before that nothing I don’t smoke hardly ever. I have a hair test in the next few days. What’s my chances

  • Hi,
I was in Colorado a week ago and I had about 40 mg of edibles over the course of 4 days. I have a drug test coming up in the next week, and I don't know if it's hair or urine. The last time I had smoked weed was a year a prior, so I'm an infrequent user. How likely is it for the weed to show up in either test?
